Happy New Year!

Shifting into another January 1 always seems to evoke a desire to clean the slate (how did it get so dirty?), start something fresh (or re-fresh), find one's way back to some version of the beginning and begin (again). On the cusp of 2016, I couldn't think of a better way to start the year (or this blog) than with the 216 different colours in the BreakThroughColour deck.

All of them? Sure. Why not! It's New Year's Day. Let's celebrate!

It's pretty cool to see them all at once, even teeny tiny, in this row-by-row colour flow.

But this new year's resolution isn't about 'all at once.' It's about the 'more' of 'less.' It's about slowing down, going deeper, pacing the palette. One a day, like a vitamin, a glass of water, a slow stretch, a deep breath. A long walk, a short nap, a warm hug. Making someone laugh, learning something new, doing something important. Being grateful, being kind, saying 'I love you.' Every day.

For the first 216 days of 2016, every BTC Colour Card gets its own 24-hour showcase, featured by itself as a virtual Card Per Diem, and shuffled in to an evolving patchwork calendar called Colour Every Month. Bookmark these as a daily dose or a monthly mash-up, to watch for swatches, be inspired, enlightened, even surprised by the simply-sourced yet infinitely diverse spectrum of colour.

Surprised? Me too. There's really no right way to sequence the hues, tints, shades, and tones waiting to be revealed. And who am I to decide if one colour is more important than another in the overall order of things? Luckily, seeing as how BTC is a big deck of cards, we can sort this out without sorting at all, just shuffle 'em up and leave it to chance. Throw them in the air and let the Colour Cards fall where they may.

Having said that, you have to start with something. And sometimes that means starting with nothing. Nada. Nil. Nought. Zip. Zilch. Zero. 000... ? Yup, that’ll do. In the beginning, let there be White.

I know what you're thinking. "Hey, wait a minute. White? That's not a colour." Oh yeah? Tell that to Sir Isaac. White may seem like a whole lotta nothing, but at the same time, it’s everything. Empty of Hue? Maybe true. But full of potential? Absolutely.

I’m not going to say much more for now. This is where I let the colours break through and speak for themselves. You, however, are welcome and encouraged, here or anywhere on this site, to add your own colour commentary in the Comment area. Share a Shade, Tweet a Tint, Pin an entire palette, and of course, Like your favourites when they're featured.

Welcome to BTC!

If you're here for the first time, you've got some catching up to do. Here's how:

  • start at the start and flow forward from there
  • flip to the calendar to see all the colours revealed, month by month
  • click on one of the colours right here, the late breaking Hues, Tints, Shades, and Tones from the past five days...

If you've got your own deck of BreakThroughColour Colour Cards, follow along, try and predict the future, or simply shuffle your way into next week if you want. Your cards, your rules. No matter how the palette plays out, with swatches on screen or cards in hand, enjoy the chronological colouring in as it happens throughout this year.

Here's to 2016 and the 216 colours of BTC!

P.S. If you're wondering how I'm going to fill a 366-day year with only 216 Colour Cards, don't worry. The BreakThroughColour deck is only the beginning. Factoring in Feb.29, as we leap through the first 216 days, I have until August 4 to figure out what to do with the other 150.
